In theory, choosing a school should be a simple matter. It’s the one
the Government provides round the corner, stupid, the one you pay your
taxes for and the one everyone can go to. In practice and for all sorts
of reasons, it isn’t like that, which partly explains why independent schools generally and boarding schools particularly still flourish. Let us define our terms. By independent schools, I mean those in membership of the Independent Schools Council, some 1270 at the last count.
